Shortlisted for the design of the new Music Theater in Griegkvartalet
The five proposals for the project that will revolutionize the Norwegian cultural landscape by establishing a new arena for world-class opera and performing arts is now on display in the foyer of the Grieg Hall in Bergen. A-lab is part of Team Zaha Hadid Architects, together with Sweco, Tyrens Sverige, AKT II, Hilson Moran Partnership and Tevas, and is holding its breath in anticipation.
The sender behind each proposal is anonymous, so the public will not know who drew which proposal when they view the various solutions as they browse through sketches and drawings. Three of the five exhibiting teams will advance to the finals. The final winner of the planning and design competition will be announced in March.
"The planning and design competition represents a crucial step towards the realisation of this largest and most important cultural building project in Bergen since the opening of Grieghallen in 1978. We have very high hopes that the solution that is ultimately chosen will be embraced with enthusiasm by the people of Bergen and western Norway", says Olav Munch, Grieghallen AS, Bernt Bauge, Musikkselskapet Harmonien and Olaf Mackenzie, Bergen Nasjonale Opera
"We are honored to be shortlisted for this landmark project," said Ludovico Lombardi, Zaha Hadid Architects’s Project Director. “Our team's primary objective is to deliver a design that pays homage to the cultural significance of the existing structure while creating a new architectural icon in its own right. We envision an engaging city floor that offers a wide range of activities for all age groups, transforming Griegkvartalet into the vibrant urban hotspot of Bergen. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with the client, local stakeholders, and our design partners to enrich Norway's vibrant cultural tapestry”.
The new music theatre and concert hall, situated at Edvard Griegs plass within Griegkvartalet, will serve as a unique cultural powerhouse for Bergen and Western Norway, providing an ideal space for opera, musical theatre, ballet, dance, concerts, and conferences. With the awareness of the increasing demand for capacity in Grieghallen, the expansion of the music theatre will enable larger-scale productions, including musicals, to flourish.
We see the revitalised Bergen Opera House with the new music theatre and enhanced public realm as a remarkable opportunity to create a transformative space that captivates audiences, showcases artistic excellence, and enhances the local community's cultural experience.”
