Fabrikken – building of the month

"One of Norway's highest-classified rehabilitation projects", writes Norwegian green building council (Grønn byggallianse) about Fabrikken, Urtekvartalet, which has been chosen as building of the month.

Initially, the ambition was to certify Fabrikken (The Factory) as BREEAM-NOR Very Good, but during the project this was upgraded to Excellent. The minimum requirement for Excellent is 70 percent and Fabrikken i Urtekvartalet came out with a score of 76.8 percent. Fabrikken is one of the few rehabilitation projects in Norway that has achieved this level of certification.

Filled with creative students, the old factory in Nordbygata is being given a new life. Urtekvartalet is one of Oslo city centre's largest development properties and will be a new city block with three buildings which will create new connections in the city with its active ground floor, new passage and lush planting. The project includes the transformation of two existing buildings, (Fabrikken and Drivhuset) and a new building (Veksthuset). Combined these will house a school building for hundreds of creative students from Høyskolen Kristiania, over a thousand modern workplaces for a variety of businesses with restaurants, cafes and shops at street level.
